Lost in Translation
Lost in Translation
This is cute. I tried "The server crashed so I had to reboot it"
and ended up with:
"To the plow of serveur therefore it has had that point under still
beginning it"
Leave My Child Alone!
Leave My Child Alone!: "'There is no buffer zone,' said Sandra Lowe of Sonoma, Calif., who is a mother of four, including two teenage boys. 'It's a direct shot to someone's child without consent from a parent. If you were to come on campus and wanted to take a picture of a child, you have to get a release - just to take a picture. This is a lot more than that.'"
Indeed. A *lot* more.

Doesn't everybody ;)

ODTUG 2005 Conference
ODTUG 2005 Conference
Well, I'm back after spedning a week at the above linked conference. New Orleans is a good place to have this (Las Vegas is another excellent choice from he past). Lots of stuff to learn and well worth the time of any Oracle developer.
This year Microsoft was also in attendance (in force) and I think we will continue to see more of that going forward.

A+E Interactive: Oldies Too Old For Radio
A+E Interactive: Oldies Too Old For Radio
This is why options like Sirius/XM Radio will continue to grow. This generates an odd-sort of 'Deja Vu' like when cable TV appeared. People got the ability to focus on the stuff they actually wanted to consume. Gadzooks! Imagine that.

[H]ard|OCP: "The ultimate success of AMD’s X2 won’t come from retailers – it’ll be mostly based on OEM support and to this day Dell still has a bunch of crack-smokers who can’t seem to put Intel’s kool-aid down long enough to see how grossly mistaken they are to not start offering AMD – even if its only in their XPS gaming systems."
Uhhh...ouch?
CoolTechZone::Column: The Possible Doom of PC Gaming
CoolTechZone::Column: The Possible Doom of PC Gaming
Or not.
While gaming hardware for a PC that supports the newest games will always be expensive (so are the games initally) the pace is fast and after a year or so not only is that hardware cheaper, so are the games. Many people are willing to pick up a game long after the debut.
Don't misconstrue, there is still a viable high-end market for current games that take the top hardware. There will probably always be one. Not everyone buys a Ferrari...

What's behind the video game witch hunt? | Perspectives | CNET News.com
What's behind the video game witch hunt? | Perspectives | CNET News.com: "Even beyond the legal concerns, the problems with regulations of video games are obvious and manifold. Raising a child must remain a parent's responsibility, not that of some government bureaucrat. Shielding a 6-year-old from violence is one thing, but shielding a 16-year-old (who can vote in two years) is quite another. Besides, how will prohibitions on availability to minors apply to open-source software on Web sites?"
I couldn't have said it better.
People, you can't (can't!) legislate social behavior. You can TRY, but it will never succeed.

Restore fair use provisions? And this from a Virginia politician? I am speechless. Every now again an electred official actually seems to be doing the sane thing.

Tropical Weather Information
It is that time of year again and I'd like to push this most excellent web site as a resource. This is perfect, a wonder consolidation of all the various information in a well done, readable format. Updated as often as the satellite and modelling data is.
Oh yes, DONATE a few bucks. This is well worth it.

TASCAM US-122
TASCAM US-122
Just about finished with rebuilding my home sound studio and this was one of the last parts I needed. This will be interfaced with my computer and the rest of the rack equipment (a Samson 22 channel mixer, a Pyramid 600w power amp, compressor and tape decks). I still have to build a rack to hold it all, just sitting it on the shelf is not going to work :(
While I have an assortment of software that I play with, most of what I do is done with Audacity or Steinberg software (I had a little hand in helping with the Audacity project). I also use a ton of VST and Dx plug-ins for the various effects.

One of our disc drives is missing | The Register
One of our disc drives is missing | The Register
Yet another recent example of the (lack of) security around what should be extremely sensitive information in the banking industry. I am not sure if this is caused more by lax implementation of policy, bad/missing policy, shoddy work practices or something else entirely. It should be a loud shout out to someone that this sector needs looking at.

And what happens when the quad-core hits the streets next year?
While I hope nobody expects them to be drop-ins for dual-core CPUs, it will then allow mobo manufacturers to quickly lay out 8, 16 and 24-way boxen. Brilliant!
