Roomba revisions coming in September? - Engadget

Roomba revisions coming in September? - Engadget

I love mine. New features would not be a bad thing. The only thing I have found (which should not be a news flash) is that they tend to collect dirt in and around the control surfaces which means you have to partially disassemble it and clean it out every so often (once a month or so depends largely on your usage and dirt factor).

Intel: Software needs to heed Moore's Law | CNET News.com

This is tough, parallel programming starts with thinking about the code in parallel. You need to understand shared access and synchronization at a 'gut' level and even then you'll make mistakes. If you don't start with a design that is 'parallelized' you really can't shoehorn it in after the fact.

I started out with embedded systems and control systems. Most of these were by nature highly parallel and multiprocessor. It is a completely different mind-set to how the code must be built, but not one that can't be taught.

DirtBike - a photoset on Flickr

DirtBike - a photoset on Flickr

For the extended friends and family (heck, most of you are extended these days) here is what John has been up to lately. Ultimately he wants to get his street license and a street bike, but I wanted him to learn on dirt fist for a number of reasons. It really does make you a better rider in the long run (smarter is up to the rider, this DOES give you the skills to be a better rider...)

Charlie's Diary: Shaping the future

Charlie's Diary: Shaping the future: "One of the biggest risks we face is that of sleep-walking into a police state, simply by mistaking the ability to monitor everyone for even minute legal infractions for the imperative to do so.

And then there's history.

History today is patchy. I never met either of my grandfathers — both of them died before I was born. One of them I recognize from three photographs; the other, from two photographs and about a minute of cine film. Silent, of course. Going back further, to their parents ... I know nothing of these people beyond names and dates. (They died thirty years before I was born.)"

This is an incredibly honest and insightful appraisal of where TODAY'S tech is taking us tomorrow. It is not an attempt to extrapolate the tech of tomorrow. Very good read...

Sand in the Gears - Archives

Sand in the Gears - Archives: "When will public officials and opinion leaders have the courage to address a fundamental root cause of this crisis in inner cities, which is the abject failure of most males to behave like real men? When will we turn a harsh eye on the pathetic performance of so many urban churches in this regard, many of which favor preaching a Health and Wealth fantasy, rather than the plain truth that men who do not support their children are less than men, and accursed, and in dire need of a beating? "

Harsh words, but this IS a social problem and not a legal problem, or a failure of the government (no, not a political problem either*). No, none of those are perfect either, but WE (us, you me, the next guy, SOCIETY) need to accept responsibility for ourselves and our actions. We should not be dependent on 'big brother' to take care of us (wipe or noses too?)

(* granted, I see no political party that is willing to address this directly and challenge us to take that responsibility...after all, that wouldn't get many votes)

Electric Car, Electric Vehicle, ZAP, ZAP-X, Battery Technology, 100%

Electric Car, Electric Vehicle, ZAP, ZAP-X, Battery Technology, 100%: "An advanced battery system will enable the car to travel a range up to 350 miles between charges, with a rapid charge technology that can recharge the batteries in as little as 10 minutes."

Sweet, looking for something exactly like this for my new ride. Well, actually my wife's new ride. Her car died over Christmas vacation due to shoddy work by a Tuffy dealer. They refused to honor their workmanship warranty and actually just wanted to pay us the value of totalling the car. Hmmm, we spend $2500 to them for repairs (on a car that WORKED) and then their repairs destroy the engine and we are going to get like $3500 in compensation? Yea, right. So anyway As an interim solution I bought one of these and have gone back to riding that as transportation to/from work while she gets my car.
